What I understand of Taoism is that it is nothing more and nothing less than the natural flow of all things in the universe.

The "10,00 things" is simply a number too large to comprehend, so is used to indicate the limitless "things" in the universe.

To "follow the Tao" is simply accepting the natural flow of things in the universe, rather than fighting, or "swimming against the current".
