This phrase is fraught with misconceptions, especially by 'Christians'. Being 'born again' is much like you describe but many people i.e. 'Christians' will strongly resist the truth of it because the truth goes against all they've been trained to believe. It puts their back against a wall, and they may simply lash out in anger- how dare you question their beliefs! The 'Bible told me so' is a common rejoinder (although it doesn't- it actually says the opposite if the prophets are read, something few Christians actually do because it's so much easier to just put faith in the minister/priest/preacher and assume they're the ones with knowledge of God's way and thereby are telling them the truth). People are lazy. Most like to be spoon-fed the 'truth'. Whether it's true or not, it definitely doesn't require thought.
