The sin committed in Sodom was refusal to show hospitality to strangers, such as the two angels of God sent to get Lot out of the city- the Church just used a few words and made it a reason to hate and persecute non-heterosexual men (then why not lesbian women, too?).

Being kind to strangers was a key tenet to the Hebrew's, and many others, religion.
