The 'other place' implies Hell. Heaven and Hell are ancient Greek concepts, not Biblical as many claim. Jesus said that " 'Heaven' comes from within (the heart) and is spread upon the face of the earth". He distinguished that from the 'Kingdom of God'. If heaven is within us then this life, as humans, is either our heaven or our hell and it's up to each of us to choose which.

I don't know where our souls go after life as a human but I do know that our soul does go on and is more 'Self' than the human version of us ever was. Wish I had more to add.
