That isn't what was believed in the Abrahamic religions, at least not in what became Judaism. Those who died simply 'slept' in sheol, until Judgment Day and then they all rose to face God and the 'wheat' was separated from the 'chaff'. People found unworthy, the 'chaff', were simply destroyed, not sent to the Greek concept of 'eternal suffering in the lake of Hell's fire'. The 'wheat' joined God's Kingdom, which also wasn't the same as the 'eternal bliss in Heaven' of the Greek beliefs. Hellenized Jews incorporated the Greek concepts of Heaven and Hell into their religion.
And it also worked well for keeping early Christians 'in line', so to speak. And that fear of 'suffering in Hell' versus 'eternal bliss in Heaven' still works today, sadly.
And isn't at all what Jesus taught.
