Thank you, Chas, for your reply. I have a Facebook account, for what that’s worth, and Twitter. Also Instagram but only so I can see what’s going on with my nephew’s sons but use it for nothing else, a Pinterest account which I barely use other than for sharing images of items I sell (antiques, Art Pottery- my favorite type of antique, some collectibles that I sell enough of to pay for the pottery pieces I keep, LinkedIn- to keep in touch with old friends but have never tried Substack. I have a friend who keeps reminding me he’ll host a website for me at no charge but I have a WordPress site that I rarely even update so do not want to waste his time on something I probably wouldn’t use, anyway.

I write mostly fiction/short stories because it’s what I enjoy and have self-published a few collections that have received great reviews but, frankly, I don’t bother to advertise them. A couple of dollars a month is coffee money and those occasional sales cost me nothing, including time which I find I never really seem to have enough. Writing for Medium, Illumination and Illumination-Curated, and have submitted nothing to a new one I was added to, “An Idea”. All of the writing for those pubs is “work” for me but I try to write something at least once or twice a month, anyway. And short stories or poetry in my “free time” lol.

I think it would be fairer if Medium paid for all readers time rather than just members. It would give me, and everyone, I suppose, more reason to write for Medium, and the other pubs connected with Medium. As it stands, I often get more non-member readers than member reads, so, higher readership with no increased pay for introducing Medium to a larger audience. To me, that seems a poor business plan.

Thanks again,

Blaine Coleman
