Not being a physicist, I have no standing to question this but will anyway: if no information can be passed faster than light speed then how does the universe expand faster than the speed of light?

And how can it be known that the universe IS expanding at faster than the speed of light?

I'm not questioning anyone's knowledge or credentials, just asking what I see as a serious question not yet addressed.
