Kevin, thanks for sharing your story, it gives me the courage to share my own experiences with epilepsy, maybe in a story on Medium. For a long time, I didn’t want anyone, even friends, to know about it because I thought I might be seen differently, as disabled. But, as we grew older (I’m 60 now) and most of my friends have their own health issues, I have no problem with any of them knowing. Maybe, I don’t feel the need to hide, as if epilepsy makes me somehow different than others.
Best of luck and Keppra works for most people. I’ve been using a fairly high dosage since 1997, along with gabapentin and Zanax and have had only 3 grand mal seizures in all that time and only a few TIAs (transient ischemic attacks) and occasional absence seizures. My neurologist only sees me every two years now and to date, I’ve been fine.
Keep up with the medicine on the schedule your neurologist sets and you should be fine. I once made the stupid mistake of quitting on my own and as you learned, it only makes matters worse.
