Just a cursory read of Luther’s 95 Theses will illustrate that the Church had become little more than a self-serving quasi-governmental bully using God as their excuse and fear as their weapon to commit whatever heinous atrocity they deemed necessary to maintain their power over not just the little people, but kings as well.
