It was the "purity" tests that played out in the 1968 Democratic Convention that brought us Nixon. And the same in 2000 that brought us W. Bush. But whenever I've brought that up on Medium articles written by "progressives" I've been attacked in various ways and called a "boomer". I am a "boomer" and am extremely socially liberal but also have enough sense to know that no progress can be achieved by attacking one another, as happened in 1968 and 2000 and many more times of which I'm not aware.

To be truly conservative is to be fiscally responsible and that means you must also be liberal. And to be truly liberal, progressive, you must be fiscally conservative.

That's a lesson many liberal people need to learn before we allow our democracy, flawed though flawed it may be, slip into an Autocracy.
