It makes perfect sense for someone who loves to read, by the standard you set for a 'reader' and has some native talent for writing. Not many will become great, or even good, writers but a few will and for those few, it's great to take courses taught by best-selling authors. I was apparently privileged, according to published writers I know, to have studied under several very fine writers.
I liked to write, studied it at university and got lucky with having excellent teachers. It's probably not the same in every writing course, though.
And it helped that I never really cared if I made or lost money writing, I did it, do it, because I love the act of writing,
