I wondered the same thing. If the arguments aren't convincing then the author is arguing against the claim he's trying to make.
I don't believe the gospels were written early or by the Apostles they're attributed to but more for literary reasons than anything else. Every writer has his or her ow 'style' of writing and they can be distinguished from one another. Also, writing something important that you want to draw attention to meant- at that time- putting a 'known' name on it, just as roughly half of the letters attributed to Paul are widely believed to not have been written by him at all.
Just as writing styles changed between the 19th century and today, they changed then, as well. And 19th century writings are certainly easy to distinguish from 20th century writings.]
Plus, there's that lack of scribes among the Apostles and the fact that Church Bishops met in 325 AD and decided which writings would and which wouldn't be considered sacred. Out of thousands of stories about Jesus, the Apostles, and Paul that were written on snippets of papyrus or leather.
