Hidden- a Poem of Hope

The promise of life to come

A spring rocus

Remnants of dying snow hide beneath barren trees
As gray bamboo leaves cling to their stalks
And rustle in a light breeze.
Arching branches of wisteria sway
Bare arches against an azure sky.

Japanese maples and azaleas, dormant
Dry plumes of ornamental grasses reflect in the pond
Where the Shubunkin hover deep
Waiting for warmer water
And I long for spring.

For the honeysuckles and hummingbirds
Redbuds and dogwood trees
Lilacs and lush peonies, lacecaps the color of winter sky
I long for bright daisies, Asian lilies and sunflowers bold
And the intoxicating scent of a rose.

Then I see crocus and daffodils break the cold ground
The japonica has its first blooms
The forsythias bud yellow
Periwinkle runs ragged, but green
And perennials begin their summer lives.

I gaze over the sun-dappled garden
Drink in the still cool air
And realize it is spring, it’s…
