Gerald, I would say that Paul was definitely referring to himself when describing that vision. It was a common literary device in use at the time to refer to another person, typically to add more weight to the authenticity of an unusual experience rather than to claim to be the only 'witness' to such an experience. Just as putting the name of a well-known person on one's own writing tended to get the message more widely spread was also a common practice among writers of that time.
