Except that writing short stories is completely different than writing a novel. I've had quite a few published authors refer to me as a "master of the short story" yet I still haven't completed a novel that I've worked on off and on for five years. Great writing takes both talent and mastery of technical skills. A collection of my short stories has been compared, by best-selling authors, favorably to both "Catch 22" and to works of Ray Bradbury and I'm in the process of updating those stories. As far as I'm concerned, nothing I've written is ever complete to my standards.
Great article, though, it displays both talent and hard won technical skill. And Raymond Carver is one of my favorite writers.
