"Do I have a spirit or a soul. Is it a real thing or just a manifestaion of my physiology?"
I firmly believe, based on firsthand experience, that we each have a Self, capital "S"; In this world our Souls, Selves, are merely visitors by our Selves intention. Our true Selves are also Spirit. We are tripartate beings with our "human" illusion being one of those parts.
I think Bhuddism is correct when it teaches that we are transient and ever-changing, therefore "illusion" but ignores that, illusion or not, we and our thoughts do exist, permanently.
Great story, Douglas, as usual. Thanks for sharing your "thoughts" (which, as you say, are not merely a void).
