Actually, the commandment IS "Thou shall not murder", not thou shall not kill; That left it open for early Hebrews to stone some people to death- female adulterers, etc. Men weren't punished for using "whores", as witnessed by the existence of the "Temple Whores" who men used on their way to worship in the Temple. Christians toned it down, despite their other evil deeds, which were and still are "Legion". The Apostles and disciples of Jesus weren't "Christians" they called themselves "Followers of the Way", the "way" being the way Jesus taught them to live in accordance with God's love for every living person. The term "Christian" was made up around 100 CE. I'm fully against the death penalty because no one other than God has the right to put another to death (oh, and "Christians", of course).
